Apple iPod users may soon be able to transfer music from copy-protected CDs.

The EMI group has announced that it will now use Macrovision technology on its copy-protected products, which the company claims will be compatible with iPod technology.

Previously most CDs have been protected with Digital Rights Management technology, which has only been compatible with Windows technology.

“This is an important step for EMI and Apple, but even more so for music consumers who will soon be able to legitimately port music from protected discs they own to the iPod,” said EMI.

However, fans of EMI artists such as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Coldplay shouldn’t hold their breath just yet, as Apple itself is still sceptical towards EMI’s claims.

If the CDs are developed they will have usage rules modelled on the iTunes site.  Music fans will be able to upload one copy of the CD onto their computer, which can then be transferred to their iPod, and make three further copies onto blank CDs.
